The Story

About This Place

Pop Life occupies a sliver of Thao Dien's evening scene that most bars don't bother with: the dedicated vinyl listening bar. The format is straightforward — owner at the decks, LP sleeves arranged around the room, cold international beer and a thoughtfully assembled wine selection poured at the bar — but the execution draws in music lovers who've grown tired of playlist culture. Requests are genuinely welcome, spanning genres from jazz to post-punk, and the host's knowledge actively shapes each session rather than cycling through a preset rotation.

The room runs compact and cozy, which serves the concept well; vinyl listening rewards physical closeness and the ability to actually hear what's playing. The beer selection skews international and shows real curation, while the wine earns specific praise in reviews for quality that outpaces the bar's otherwise understated setting. Operating 6:30 PM to midnight Tuesday through Sunday, it fills the late-evening window that Thao Dien's coffee-and-brunch circuit leaves empty.

What sets Pop Life apart from the neighborhood's other drinking spots is the intentional listening environment. Most bars in the area use music as atmospheric filler; here it's the entire premise. The crowd that gravitates here tends toward the curious and the deliberate — people who come with a specific song in mind or want to discover something they'd never put on themselves. The energy skews intimate rather than raucous, and the experience rewards engagement over ambient conversation.

Monday is the one dark night. The rest of the week, the bar opens as Thao Dien's afternoon coffee crowd disperses, creating a natural transition for evenings that start late and run to midnight.

We came one full hour before closing time - which is 12am. The owner kept reminding us that we cannot sit for longer than an hour in a rude manner, like duh? We’re fully aware of your closing time sir 🙄 Also we didn’t intend to anyway, given his attitude from the start. Finished our beers in a rush, paid and left before midnight. Won’t ever come back

We loved stumbling across this gem! Pop Life is an LP/vinyl bar with the most perfect atmosphere, as well as great music, an impressive international beer selection, and a genuine and super friendly host.

terrible (update) I sincerely advise you to make your bar rules public on social media for customers to refer to. Your bar has a lot of rules that I think there will be other groups of customers who will not feel comfortable. There will be first-time customers, if you feel something is not appropriate, you can remind them in a friendly and welcoming way. There are many ways instead of making them feel like they are at fault and disrespected.
