I had a disappointing experience here. We were visiting from the U.S. and are used to Japanese BBQ there, so we understand there can be differences, but the service really affected our visit. Our Vietnamese is limited, and it felt like our server was laughing and talking about us with other staff. It was noticeable and made us uncomfortable, which took away from the overall experience. If there were differences in how the food is meant to be prepared or eaten here, we would have appreciated some guidance instead of being laughed at. When it came time to pay, things were also confusing. We had mentioned upfront that we wanted to pay by credit card, but instead of explaining the process, she placed an iPad in front of us without guidance. She mentioned Apple Pay, but there was no clear indication of where to tap, which left us unsure of what to do. Only after we said we would use a card did she explain that it needed to be taken to the front to be processed. The lack of clear communication, combined with how we were treated, made the experience feel awkward and frustrating.

Sumo Yakiniku BBQ - Yakiniku restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City
About This Place
Yakiniku dining centers on the ritual of the meal itself — raw cuts arriving at the table, grilled to preference over individual burners, shared across the grill rather than plated by the kitchen. Sumo Yakiniku BBQ has built a steady following in Thao Dien, accumulating 654 Google reviews at a 4.3 rating, which in a neighborhood dense with dining competition points toward consistent execution rather than novelty appeal alone.
The address on Võ Nguyên Giáp places it on one of the main arteries through the district — visible and accessible, rather than buried in a residential lane. Hours running 11am to 9pm daily make it more lunch-capable than many Japanese restaurants in the area, which tend to skew toward dinner-only service. That consistent schedule also suits families and office groups planning midday meals.
The communal format suits groups naturally. Multiple diners manage a shared grill, pass plates, and adjust heat to preference — it extends the meal beyond the food into the process of preparing it together. Families and colleagues fill the yakiniku format well, and the pacing is self-directed rather than kitchen-controlled, which removes the pressure of courses arriving on someone else's schedule.
A 4.3 rating held across more than 650 reviews suggests a kitchen that handles sourcing and preparation steadily over time. For residents or visitors looking for Japanese BBQ in Thao Dien that opens at 11am and sits on a main road rather than requiring a search, this is one of the more established answers in the neighborhood.
Reviews
We absolutely love dining at Sumo Yakiniku Vincom! The food is always delicious, and the staff are very helpful and attentive, making the whole experience even better. What stands out the most is the quality of the meat — it’s always tender, fresh, and flavorful. Perfect for grilling! And we can’t get enough of their desserts, especially the matcha mochi and ice cream. So satisfying after a hearty meal! This place never disappoints — we always come back and it’s definitely our go-to spot for yakiniku cravings. Highly recommended!
Good service and good food. Staff are friendly and attentive. They changed the BBQ grid once charred. Chicken with miso paste and pork rib with basil are tasty. Drinks are good too.
Amazing and comfortable seating a typical style. Combo Fuji is worth a try. A bit expensive.
We ordered 3 types of meat. When the meat was cooked and we started eating, I noticed that the meat was very chewy and tough. I could barely swallow the meat. On the meat there was a lot of fat and was hard to cut off. I do not recommend this place. I have been to better places than this. I expected better service here.
