These days, I am trying to work my way through the myriad of cocktail bars opening across Saigon. Tonight I tried THE SIX Im here on a Friday and there’s a party vibe with a DJ. Spacious with a high ceiling and some loft seating. I like this place. Bartender (think he said “you can call me Craig”) has great charisma and makes some good cocktails to boot. Fridays may perhaps be a tad loud for those looking for the more typical “speakeasy” cocktail bar vibe. Thursdays they host an acoustic performance. Had a “Dark and Stormy” as well as their “New York Sour”. The former was excellent. The latter a tad unbalanced for my taste. Think the red wine flavours weren’t to my liking. Returned to THE SIX on a Monday to try their food and a few more cocktails. The “Lahoa “ sounds complex reading the ingredients from the menu but on the palate it just came across as sugar and tonic forward. The “Boulevardier” came across much better. A classic cocktail, the version they made for me hada Wild Turkey Bourbon base as I mentioned I’m not a fan of Jim Beam (or Jim Beam Black). Well made with good balance. Enjoyed this drink. Food: Crab Bisque pasta with cherry tomatoes… The pasta al-dente, made just right. The crab bisque dominated the flavour. It could have used with a tad of tomato puree mixed in. The crab meat topping was unfortunately tasteless. I’d say a 7/10 only because the crab bisque used was tasty. Prawn stuffed chicken wings with spicy basil dip. Ordered as it was something new. They debone the middle portion of the wing and stuff it with a paste of chicken and prawn meat. My thoughts… the flavour of the dry rub they use is delicious and the spicy basil dip was surprisingly delicious. However the chicken/prawn stuffing was rather tasteless. My favourite portion was the wing tips. 😊 Again, I’d say a 7/10 Foods OK but would not come here for food. Their cocktails are a more solid bet.
