Discovering a Hidden Gem in Thao Dien, Ho Chi Minh City: Dongmak In the world of gastronomy, true pleasure often comes not from flamboyant large-scale restaurants, but from finding a small, hidden gem tucked away in a quiet alley. Dongmak, located on Nguyen Cu Street in Thao Dien, is exactly that kind of place. Analyzing this space with the precision of an IT professional examining a sophisticated algorithm, I can see that the harmony of taste, atmosphere, and tradition has been perfectly engineered. The spread of dishes feels meticulously calculated for the ultimate pairing with Makgeolli (Korean rice wine). First, the stir-fry featuring Sundae (Korean blood sausage) and squid offers a brilliant variation in texture. The chewy Sundae combined with tender squid and crisp vegetables creates a rhythmic delight on the palate. It is impressive how they took a potentially heavy dish and refined it with such fresh ingredients. Second, the golden-brown Jeon (pan-fried delicacies) and Tofu with Kimchi act as the perfect supporters to amplify the smooth sweetness of Makgeolli. The savory richness of the fried dishes is elegantly cleansed by the wine's carbonation, while the simple yet deep flavor of the well-aged Kimchi and tofu ensures your glass never stays empty. Third, the charming and cozy aesthetic of Dongmak is a standout. Though the space is small, the warmth and sincerity contained within have a density that large restaurants simply cannot replicate. For someone in IT living in a cold digital world, the analog warmth of this place provides a much-needed "debugging" of the soul. As I finished with a refreshing spoonful of icy Dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth, it became crystal clear why Dongmak is becoming a must-visit spot among foodies in Ho Chi Minh City. With great liquor, honest food to match, and an inviting atmosphere, Dongmak is a culinary sanctuary in Thao Dien that must be experienced.

Visited Dongmak Thao Dien recently and had a pretty good experience overall. The food was okay and a bit different from the usual Korean restaurants in Saigon, which I liked. It feels like a nice place to hang out, have some dishes to share, and enjoy a few beers with friends. One small downside was the fish cake — it was a bit cold when served, so that was slightly disappointing. But the highlight for me was definitely the staff and service. The service level was very high — attentive, professional, and friendly throughout the meal. That really made the experience much better. Overall, a good spot for casual drinks and Korean food with solid service.
A cozy little spot serving up yummy Korean dishes perfect for a drink or two with friends. Highly recommend the Clam Soup, Fish Roe Rice Bowl, and Fish Jeon. Also their Peach Makgeolli is super refreshing with crushed ice. Price is quite reasonable in the area.
The food was really impressive, served in big portions with many side dishes. Totally worth to try. The restaurant has elegant decor with table lamps and fresh flowers, creating a serene and comfortable atmosphere, ideal for those who wish to enjoy a meal in a peaceful and sophisticated setting
Great little Korean restaurant. Recommend the fried calamari and glass noodles. Also the in house made frozen rice wine (makgeolli) is so good. Service quick and free side dishes an extra plus. Definitely coming back!
