The Story

About This Place

A Balkan restaurant in Southeast Asia is unexpected enough, but the kitchen on Đường Số 64 in Thao Dien has built a 4.8-star reputation through consistency rather than novelty alone. The menu stays close to tradition: ćevapi arrive juicy and well-seasoned in portions that live up to the billing, while the sarma—stuffed cabbage rolls—draws comparisons to dishes guests recall from Dubrovnik and the Adriatic. The meat platter is the centerpiece for groups, a spread of smoky grilled cuts served alongside mashed potatoes and house-baked sourdough that rarely leaves the table unfinished. Burek, the layered pastry central to Balkan cooking, rounds out the heavier end of the menu; grilled paprika, offered as a starter, is the kind of detail that signals the kitchen isn't cutting corners on the supporting cast—one reviewer called it an unexpected pleasure this deep into Asia.

The setting is quiet enough for a family dinner or a business lunch that doesn't require raised voices, and outdoor seating—where guests have sat under open skies on New Year's Eve—draws those after unhurried evenings. Service is generally attentive, and the owner's personal warmth appears consistently across reviews; guests who arrive curious about the cuisine tend to become regulars. Pricing sits on the affordable end for Thao Dien, and portion sizes run large enough that takeaway boxes are frequently requested. Chevap fills a gap that no other address in the neighborhood covers: a focused, traditionally-minded kitchen where diners from the Balkans report finding the flavors close to home, and where first-timers get a genuine introduction to a culinary tradition that rarely makes it this far east.

My Balkan husband wanted to taste a bit of home, and he was super surprised that some dishes tasted even better than back home! The waiter was very kind and attentive, and he even gave us some great tips for our trip. Svaka čast! 😁 We truly enjoyed everything and will gladly come back!

I was very surprised when a balkan restaurant popped up on Google maps while walking Thao Dien. Of course I had to try it. I ordered the sarma and the pork souvlaki. The sarma was delicious and really reminded me the sarma I had when I was in Dubrovnik. Portions were big, no going easy here! Great experience, kind service, highly recommended!

A wonderful restaurant for grilled meat lovers. We ordered a selection of meats and a few appetizers, and everything was excellent. Finding an appetizer of roasted peppers in Asia was unexpected and pleasant. The waiters, however, were inattentive and misread our order, bringing three bottles of beer instead of two, and the error was never corrected. I had to ask for my Coke several times, but the food was so good that the rest was no problem.
