FUNAGI - Fusion Unagi don - Japanese restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City

Perfect lunch set, not too much just enough. Cool and cozy atmosphere

Fatty, delicious, well cooked eel; amazing miso soup, lovely pickled ginger, great chrysantheum tea.

The host is super nice. The portion of the dish is bigger compare to the price tag. He used to work in a bar so the drink was nice too. Cozy place with good food and super host. Should take a try whenever you want to have Unagi

There's an unagi specialty shop that opened on a quiet street in Tân Định ward (formerly Đa Kao ward). It's a small place with only 5 counter seats, which gives it a nice, hideaway feel. The Vietnamese owner grills the unagi on a charcoal grill at the front of the shop after you order, so you can watch them cook. The unagi is prepared Kanto-style, with crispy skin and fluffy meat. The sweet and savory homemade sauce goes really well with the rice, which is cooked on the firmer side. It's also a nice touch that they have sansho pepper and extra sauce on the table. You can tell the owner respects the food culture, and their hospitality makes for a comfortable dining experience. It's a solid spot where you can get authentic unagi at a reasonable price—offering good taste and value.

I used this restaurant for take-out. The price was very reasonable for Japanese food. The eel had no smell and was so delicious that it was hard to believe it was take-out.
