The Story

About This Place

Cỏ Café occupies a street-level spot on Mê Linh where mismatched furniture, climbing plants, and an eclectic mix of cross-cultural decorations create an atmosphere that feels somewhere between a northern highlands village and an older Saigon. Most seating is outdoors — small tables, small chairs, everyone pulled close — which by evening produces a particular density: regulars who've made it part of their routine, international visitors drawn by word of mouth, and groups settling in for the long haul.

The coffee menu leans traditional. Phin-brewed coffee is the anchor, and the bạc xỉu — priced at 33,000 VND — is properly sized and honestly made. Grilled cheese bread shows up consistently alongside cold coffees and fresh fruit drinks. The peach tea and peach yogurt round out a menu that doesn't overreach; the kitchen isn't trying to be anything beyond what it is.

Staff are a notable part of the draw. Multiple reviewers single out the team for attentiveness and warmth — there's a recurring account of staff crowding around a translated compliment on a phone screen, which captures something about how the place operates. It's small enough that the people working there notice who's there, and the energy reads as genuinely positive rather than performed.

A practical note for evening visitors: outdoor seating at night means mosquitoes are part of the deal. This doesn't appear to deter anyone — the cafe runs busy through its 10:30 PM close most nights. At over a thousand Google reviews and a 4.4 rating, Cỏ Café has built a following that spans neighborhood locals, expats, and international tourists alike, which is unusual for a spot this unassuming in its presentation. The affordability and the absence of pretension are, by most accounts, the point.

A peaceful hidden gem in Bình Thạnh! Cỏ Café is a charming old school spot on Mê Linh street. The vintage vibe, quiet garden setting and classic phin coffee make it the perfect escape from the city buzz. No frills, just great atmosphere and simple, quality drinks. A true hidden gem if you love slow, nostalgic spaces

[Update Jan 17, 2025] I returned here for the first time since a year ago. My opinion has changed since living in Vietnam for a year. This is an okay coffee shop. Mostly outdoor seating at small tables and with small chairs, everyone is packed together. This is still a popular place throughout the operating hours. Tried the bạc xỉu (white coffee) for 33K/$1.30. The price of the coffee is on the low-mid range. The size of the coffee is on the standard small range. *I did have to lower the stars I previously gave when I was a new expat in Vietnam and didn't know better. -- Popular place, especially late evenings. Nice place to relax and chat. The prices are comparable for the area, maybe a tad cheaper, but the coffee is on the smaller side. Have tried three yogurt drinks. To me, the coffee version didn't taste as good as the plain, but it probably tastes like it's supposed to; 30K ($1.25) ea. The blueberry is 40K ($1.65), tastes good.
